Both a Mason Dixon Memory and The Sand Castle show how strong themes even though they are different stories. A flashback is when the character of the story talks about a thing that happened in the past to either show what happened before the compare the two different situations or it impacted the character. Author uses flashbacks to show important memories to show how a character has changed overtime and explain why something in the present is different from before. In the A MAson Dixon Memory and The Sand Castle flashbacks help readers to compare past and present things. These flashbacks help readers to compare past and present events that has happened. These flashbacks show similarities and differences between what is happening now and what happened. They also help us see messages the author wants us to learn like friendship, racism, and how the past affects today.
In both stories flashbacks show how the past and present connects in important ways. In A mAson Dixon Memory Clifton Dacis listens to Donde;se story and remembers his own painful experience of racism when he was a little boy. In the present Dondre is not allowed to play golf at a white only club. In the past Clifton was not allowed to enter the park because he is black. These flashbacks are similar because both of them face racism but they also experience love and support from friends who stood up for them. In The Sand Castle a grandmother and her grandchildren build a sand castle. Grandma remembers about this moment when she was small . The thing they did is the same but the experience they each had had a very big difference.
Although there are similarities, the flashbacks can also show differences between past and present. In Mason Dixon Memory Clifton is an adult trying to remember something from 32 years ago. He talks about how things changed and how people now fight back racism. Donde the high school student they experience something similar but he is living in the present time. In the Sand Castle the flashback shows a happy memory from the past while the present is also the same. The difference is that in Davis' story the flashback has pain and while in the sand castle it's joyful. The characters are also different. Davis talks to himself and the white friends while the sand castle is about the memories of the family building the sand castle.
Flashbacks have a strong impact on the readers. Thye show emotions that can be hidden and can help us understand the deeper meaning of the story. In A Mason Dixon Memory the flashback helps us see how racism can hurt people in the past and how it can still happen today. It also shows us that people can fight against it with bravery and kindness. The author wants us to remember that freedom and fairness are not easy to earn. In the sand castle it shows us that love from our family will stay with us. These flashbacks show the importance of remembering where we came from. But even without flashback, the story still work because the themes are shown clearly in the text through what is happened.In Mason Dixon the flashback and present talks about children facing racism.This shows that even if they didn't included the flashback we would know what's going on because it talking about the same thing.In the sand castle the flashback tell about how grandma loves the sun.Even if they didn't include this we would know how much grandma loves the sun by her movements and speeches.
In conclusion flashbacks in both stories help us see the connections between past and present. THey show how some problems like racism can still happen today and need us to be brave.. They also show how good memories from the past can bring peace and joy to the present. The flashbacks can be sad or happy; it helps the readers learn the characters better and show us what they are feeling at the moment. Flashback is a powerful way to bring emotion to a story.
