The novel The Elephant Man is written by Tim vicary, talks about a deformed man named Joseph Merrick who was used for money by a man named Ross. One day, when Ross was going to close his business after the day, a kind doctor came in. His name was Treves but unlike other people Treves was more concerned about Joseph then scared. Unlike other people who would mock him, dr. Treves decided to give him a better life at a hospital where he had his own room. After some time, in order to make Joseph feel better about his appearance, dr. Treves decided to start introducing Merrick to other people. Each and everyone of them treated him very kindly like he was just a normal human instead of screaming or even worse. After that day, Merricks life only became better. Even the queen decided to meet him and became friends with him. One day when dr. Treves came to check on Merrick, he found him dead on his bed after trying to sleep like a human.
Human nature can be very complex but one ugly human nature is greed. Human beings should not be so greedy and selfish all the time as it creates problems that wouldn’t have happened if humans were not greedy. For example, Ross was extremely greedy and selfish, he didn’t care about Merrick. All he cared about was how to earn more money even when he was manipulating people. Not only that but Ross already had everything he ever needed. As in the novel, even when he had almost everything they wanted, he still decided to get more. This just proves how money can lure anyone into wanting more. Now if Ross decided to stop always asking for more he would have been perfectly fine with no bad karma or hurting others. That is why it’s best to not be too greedy or selfish.
Another ugly human nature would be being over curious and the hatred of ugliness. Curiosity might be good but if you're too curious then it can lead to people getting hurt. For example, In the novel a lot of people were curious to see Merrick but then ended up getting scared and started to scream at him. This just shows how sometimes being curious can lead to hurting each other. Not only that but A lot of people also showed hatred to Merrick just because he looked terrifying and descousting. This was a bit of a problem because it had made Merrick lose his happiness and confidence. He lost the chance to have a job, a loving family, and a normal life just because of his ugliness and appearance. That is why people should stop being so judgmental.
Even though there is lots of ugly human nature, there are still good parts of it. For example kindness towards each other and the care people provide. For example, in the end even when Merrick dies, dr. Treves is still optimistic and cares about him for a big and great deal. Not only that but unlike the other people he was the first person who actually saw him as a normal human being. This didn’t just change anything, it changed everything for Merrick, as he has probably never felt the happiness of just being treated like all the other normal people. This is why there are still parts of human nature that are surprisingly great.
